Wembanyama is the first Spur since Tim Duncan to capture the award three months in a row.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama has done it again, is living up to the massive hype in his rookie season—and has perhaps cemented his case for Rookie of the Year as well.

The NBA announced that Wembanyama has been named the Western Conference Kia Rookie of the Month for games played in March. This marks his third straight Rookie of the Month honor, making him the first Spur since Tim Duncan to capture the award three months in a row.

His March stats are eye-popping, and if the current trajectory holds we might need to come up with new words to describe the young star’s play.

Wembanyama played 12 games (all starts) in March, averaging 21.2 points and 10.5 rebounds in 31.7 minutes per matchup. He also notched 1.7 steals and a league-leading 3.83 blocks per game, and led all NBA rookies in scoring, rebounds and blocks for the month.

It was also another month that saw Wembanyama post multiple historic statlines. In March 17’s overtime win over Brooklyn, he finished with 33 points, 15 rebounds, seven blocks and seven assists, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (three times), Charles Barkley (1986) and Joel Embiid (2017) as the only players – rookies or otherwise – to reach those numbers in a single game.

On March 29 against the Knicks, another Spurs win, Wembanyama became the first rookie since Shaquille O’Neal in 1993 to reach 40 points and 20 rebounds in a game. Wembanyama scored a career-high 40 points in that game, and posted eight double-doubles over the course of the month.

He also became the first rookie since LeBron James in December 2003 to accrue five performances of 30 or more points in a single calendar month.
