IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A trip to the Sweet 16 is on the line for the Iowa Women’s basketball team tonight. This will be a tough game for the Hawkeyes tonight as West Virginia is for real, having one of the best point guards in the country. The Hawkeyes will need another big defensive game from Gabbie Marshall.
Marshall will have to guard West Virginia’s best player tonight and that is 5″8 guard JJ Quinerly who is averaging almost 20 points a game.
“I will guard number 11. I will take on the challenge of guarding her and limit her touches and make shots more challenging,” said Marshall.
“I mean, she is going to have to really work hard defensively getting around screens. she’s gonna have to play a lot of ball screens. And then she has to be able to defend and keep her from going downhill without fouling. That is not an easy thing to do,” said Coach Lisa Bluder.
This will be her final game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and she says she will soak it all in when they run out of the tunnel.
“Especially, the second time we run out and it actually gets packed. There is not a seat open. I can look around and say ‘Man this is amazing.’ Just with what the coaches built and what this team is. It is pretty special.”
