San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and Iowa women’s basketball superstar Caitlin Clark have an unlikely connection, with the 22-year-old’s brother a former college football standout.

Purdy, 24, spent four years at Iowa State, where he recorded the most wins of any quarterback in program history with a 30-17 record, while also leading the team to four straight bowl games. The 2022 NFL Draft’s “Mr. Irrelevant” is also Iowa State’s leader in passing yards with 12,170, touchdown passes with 81, completions with 993, and completion percentage at an impressive 67.7 percent.

Amazingly, his backup quarterback was Clark’s older brother, Blake Clark, who attended Iowa State from 2018 to 2022. Purdy and Blake weren’t just teammates sharing a locker room, though, as they also developed a close personal friendship.

So much so that Blake Clark will be at Purdy’s wedding to fiancee Jenna Brandt. The couple met at Iowa State during their college days and although a date for the wedding is unknown at this point, Blake is already on the guest list.

Purdy’s love and admiration for the Clark family was on display in the build-up to the 49ers’ Super Bowl LVIII defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas last Sunday. Reporter and social media star Austin Franklin asked Purdy about his thoughts on Caitlin Clark due to his connection to her brother and the NFL star couldn’t stop smiling.

“So Blake Clark is a great friend of mine, he’s going to be at my wedding,” Purdy replied. “He’s the man, yeah I love him, he was one of my best friends for four years at Iowa State.”

“Caitlin, I wasn’t around as much but obviously just through Blake,” Purdy continued. “We’d always watch her and what a baller she was from day one. Obviously, from high school, we knew she was gonna be a game-changer. So, to see her now absolutely killing it, I couldn’t be happier for her.”

Purdy also admitted that Caitlin Clark is an inspiration for him. “I think just the grit,” he said about what he takes from Clark. “The competitive nature that he has. When you watch it, it makes you want to play, it makes you want to play your sport well. So, when you see her out there getting her teammates fired up and stuff like that, it reminds you of when you’re out on the field playing and your willingness to win.”

Purdy was asked about his connection to Caitlin Clark before she smashed the NCAA women’s all-time point-scoring record held by Kelsey Plum. Clark scored 49 points against Michigan on Thursday night to take her all-time points total to 3,569, further solidifying herself as the expected 2024 WNBA first-overall pick if she declares.

Clark is also within striking distance of eclipsing basketball legend Pete Maravich’s record of 3,667 total points scored, needing 99 points in her final four regular-season games, plus any postseason action, to be the outright top points scorer across men’s and women’s NCAA basketball.
