Caitlin Clark Claps Back At WNBA Star Who Suggested She’s Been Benefitting From White Privilege

Caitlin Clark has fired back at a WNBA star who recently asserted that skin color has made all the difference in terms of the opportunities players like herself and others like the former Iowa star get during their careers.

Clark made her WNBA debut for the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night. While she’s undoubtedly increased the number of eyes on the WNBA season, certain players and coaches don’t seem to like her.

Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson recently told the Associated Press that Clark’s popularity is due to her being white.

“I think it’s a huge thing,” she said. “I think a lot of people may say it’s not about black and white, but to me, it is.

“It really is because you can be top notch at what you are as a black woman, but yet maybe that’s something that people don’t want to see.”

One of great things about the attention Caitlin Clark is bringing to the WNBA is folks getting to see some of the incredible ballers that have been in the league for years.

Wilson suggested that she will never be as marketable as Clark, no matter how hard she works.

“They don’t see it as marketable, so it doesn’t matter how hard I work,” she added.

“It doesn’t matter what we all do as black women, we’re still going to be swept underneath the rug. That’s why it boils my blood when people say it’s not about race because it is.”

Nike signed Wilson to a signature shoe deal shortly after making these comments comments.

Caitlin Clark Addresses A’ja Wilson’s Comments

Caitlin Clark addressed what Wilson had to say following her 20-point outing on Tuesday night.

“I think there’s opportunities for every single player in women’s basketball. I think the more opportunities we can give across the board, that’s what’s going to elevate women’s basketball,” she offered.

“It doesn’t need to be one or two players, and I think that even goes back to college. I think we can … the parity in women’s basketball is what’s making more people want to come and watch it. I think the more you spread the love, show people, show their talents, show their teams, that’s just going to continue to elevate it. So, I think that’s the biggest thing.”

While Clark kicked her WNBA career with 20 points on her account, she didn’t exactly cover herself in glory as the Fever lost 92-71, and she committed 10 turnovers.

After fans faulted the Chicago Sky player for attending the May 6 Met Gala the day before her preseason game against the New York Liberty, the WNBA star called a time out. “A lot of people told me I shouldn’t have went to the Met Gala, that I wasn’t going to be focused playing against the runner-ups,” she said during a recent press conference. “And I went to the Met Gala, slayed the Met Gala in New York, came back, slayed against New York. It’s what I do.” (ICYMI, the May 7 game saw the Sky defeat the NY Liberty 101 to 53.) Another thing she does? Act as an example for other women. “I give a lot of confidence to so many different people, knowing I’m not one-dimensional,” the 22-year-old noted. “Women don’t have to be one-dimensional. They don’t have to do one thing. I think that’s what’s growing the game. People love me off the court, too, they love me because I am who I am and I speak on things that a lot of people may be scared to speak on or stand up on.” So comma when it comes down to it, Angel added, “Even on the bad days, on the days people may hate me, I’m just going to continue to keep being me.” Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images The former LSU player—who made it to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA women’s tournament this year—recently detailed the other struggles she’s dealt with as a female athlete living in the spotlight.​​”I’ve been through so much,” the emotional athlete said at the post-game press conference April 1 following LSU’s loss. “I’ve seen so much. I’ve been attacked so many times. Death threats. I’ve been sexualized. I’ve been threatened. I’ve been so many things and I’ve stood strong every single time.” But thankfully, her teammates—new and old—will always have her back. “Everybody can have their opinion on Angel Reese, but y’all don’t know her,” LSU guard Flau’Jae Johnson said. “I know the real Angel Reese, and the person I see every day is a strong person, is a caring, loving person. The crown she wear is heavy.” And at the Met Gala, Angel she wore that metaphorical crown, walking the carpet in a cyan-colored Marco Capaldo gown, complete with feathered skirt and beaded bodice. ANGEL REESE’S THREE-WORD REACTION TO WNBA EXPANSION NEWS

The rise of the WNBA continues to grow day-by-day for the league. There’s been incredible news surrounding the league in the past week, but the newest update has everyone on notice. The WNBA has announced its intention to add an expansion team in Toronto

Angel Reese of the 2024 WNBA draft spoke out on the new updates in the league, saying “Change is coming.” The latest draft may not be the reason for some of the major changes in the league, but they’ve sure sparked some life into the WNBA.  It seems like the WNBA is growing at a rapid rate, with massive improvements every day. Some of the latest changes include the league switching to charter flights for every team, investing $25 million in season in doing so, and ramping up security for each team.
