Indiana Fever’s recent acquisition of Caitlin Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, has sparked excitement and high expectations within the organization.
General Manager Lin Dunn, a seasoned basketball veteran, expressed her confidence in Clark’s ability to transition to the professional level seamlessly.
Dunn, with over 50 years of coaching and managing experience, has seen her fair share of talent, but she believes Clark’s skill set and mental fortitude set her apart.
“I’m a real big fan of what she’s already been able to accomplish in the spotlight,” Dunn stated. “She’s physically strong. She’s got strength in her legs, in her core, and in her hands. So I’m expecting her to have an impact on the WNBA.”
The anticipation surrounding Clark’s arrival was palpable, with over 6,000 fans turning out for the Fever’sWNBA Draft party at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
This turnout, larger than most of the team’s home games last season, underscores the excitement and expectations surrounding Clark’s addition to the roster.
Clark’s contribution to the Fever
Dunn drew parallels between Clark’s arrival and the impact of past No. 1 picks like Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird, who led the Seattle Storm to multiple championships.
“When we were able to put Bird and Jackson together, a great point guard and a great post player, we were able to take off in Seattle, and I think that can happen here when you put Clark with (Aliyah) Boston,”Dunn remarked.
Clark herself is eager to contribute to the Fever’s success and is honored to be a part of the team. “It’s definitely our goal to get back to championship habits,” Clark said.
“It’s so cool for me.” With the Fever boasting a talented roster that includes Kelsey Mitchell and NaLyssa Smith, Dunn’s vision of a championship-caliber team led by Clark and Boston seems within reach.
