The Swede is a lifelong Reds fan and today managed a team of Kop legends to a 4-2 win over former Ajax stars.

He said: “I was crying.

“To sit on the bench for Liverpool has been my dream my whole life.

“Now it has happened and it was a beautiful day — the crowd, the game, the players, everything.

“Thank you for Liverpool for giving me this opportunity.”

Steven Gerrard jetted back from Saudi Arabia, where he manages Al- Ettifaq, for the LFC Foundation Charity game.

The England legend  said: “As soon as I knew he was going to be the gaffer, I couldn’t wait to play for him one more time.”

Eriksson, Three Lions boss from 2001 to 2006, wept when a huge crowd sang You’ll Never Walk Alone before kick-off.

Former Celtic winger Derk Boerrigter headed Ajax into a shock second-minute lead.

And ex-Manchester City forward Kiki Musampa doubled that advantage before the break.

French defender Gregory Vignal pulled one back, then Champions League winner Djibril Cisse made it 2-2.

Nabil El Zhar, from the Rafa Benitez era, smashed the hosts in front.

And Fernando Torres made sure it was Sven’s day with a late close-range clincher.
