When Christian musician Mandisa auditioned for American Idol, she was elated to be going to Hollywood – and then she heard Simon Cowell’s comment.
The then 29-year-old auditioned for the singing competition in 2006 for the show’s fifth season. She went on to place ninth in the overall show, but before that happened, she had to sing for judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson.
Mandisa sang Fallin’ by Alicia Keys and received a yes from every judge. Remembering the moment later on the show, Mandisa said: “When I first auditioned in Chicago I was so happy with what the judges had to say.”

“That was until I was at home and watched what Simon said when I walked out of the room,” Mandisa continued. After she left the audition room, Simon asked the crew behind the scenes: “Do we have a bigger stage this year?”
Paula hit him as Randy let out a laugh. But Mandisa wasn’t laughing and later during Hollywood week, she addressed the Brit’s comments.
“What I want to say to you is that, yes, you hurt me and I cried and it was painful, it really was. But I want you to know that I’ve forgiven you and that you don’t need someone to apologize in order to forgive somebody,” she told him.
She continued: “I figure that if Jesus could die so that all of my wrongs could be forgiven, I can certainly extend that same grace to you.”

Simon replied, “I’m so sorry, Mandisa. I’ve been humbled by your words.” He then stood up and gave her a hug.
Mandisa passed away on April 18 at the age of 47 according to the Christian radio station K-Love. She was found dead in her Nashville home on April 18.
The radio station released a statement that read: “Even more than her music, the Platinum-selling singer will forever be known for her huge heart and sincerity.”
“Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart,” the statement continued.
