The resurgent Reds have just completed one leg of an ambitious quadruple bid – so who has been their top performer to date?

So far, so good for Liverpool this season, with one trophy down and maybe three to go – which is quite a remarkable situation for Jurgen Klopp’s side. After all, before the 2023-24 campaign began, there were legitimate doubts over the strength of the revamped Reds.

However, ‘Liverpool Reloaded’, as Jurgen Klopp called them, have just won the Carabao Cup with ‘kids’, are presently top the Premier League after just two defeats in 26 matches, play Sparta Prague in the last 16 of the Europa League and host Southampton in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The fear remains that fatigue will eventually catch up with a team that has been decimated by injuries in recent weeks but Liverpool’s incredible resilience was once again on show at Wembley on Sunday, meaning that there is every chance that Klopp’s final season as manager will end with further silverware.

1Mohamed Salah (9/10) ⇔

Liverpool’s Egyptian king never gets injured so it came as quite the shock to see him hobble out of the Africa Cup of Nations in January, and then suffered a setback after returning to action with a goal and an assist against Brentford earlier this month.

The word is, though, that Salah is almost ready to return again and that’s just the best possible news for Liverpool, given the winger has been in sensational form this season with 19 goals and nine assists, completely justifying the club’s decision to not even entertain the idea of selling Salah to Saudi Arabia last summer for mad money.

2Virgil van Dijk (9/10) ⇑

After an undeniably poor start to the Dutchman’s reign as club captain, with Van Dijk getting himself sent off for the clumsiest of challenges against Newcastle before then talking himself into further trouble, there was was talk that the 32-year-old defender was in decline. As he said himself, “They thought I was finished.”

Turns out he wasn’t – not by a long shot, with Van Dijk capping a remarkable revival by heading home the winner in the Carabao Cup final after yet another dominant display at the back. With the centre-back in this form again, anything now seems possible for Liverpool.

3Darwin Nunez (8.5/10) ⇑

Let’s face it: the unpredictable Uruguayan will never become the game’s most clinical finisher – even if his lob against Brentford was quite something to behold – but he’s silencing those that dismissed him as a flop after a difficult first season at Anfield.

Indeed, Nunez has become integral to Klopp’s attack – and not just because of his pace but also the way in which he has got to grips with what his manager was demanding of him from a defensive perspective.
