I’m a Celeb’s Adele Roberts has bravely opened up about her health struggles during her stint on the ITV reality show, revealing that she was “really ill” as her body was “succumbing to bowel cancer.”The 45 year old radio presenter, who appeared on the show in 2019 and received a cancer diagnosis two years later, recalled experiencing symptoms like extreme fatigue and an unusual chill while in the jungle.Adele, who feels fortunate to be alive, shared that her partner Kate was so alarmed by her condition that she contacted the show’s producers to ensure Adele was checked on. Speaking to The Times, Adele reflected: “Looking back now, I was really, really ill. No use without permission.)Following her diagnosis, Adele underwent colostomy surgery to remove a tumour from her bowel and was fitted with a stoma bag, which she affectionately named ‘Audrey. ‘ Throughout her treatment, which included chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Adele kept her followers updated via social media.Nine months after her diagnosis, Adele joyfully announced she was cancer-free, although she continues to live with her ileostomy bag. Adele first shot to fame on Big Brother’s 2002 series before transitioning into radio, where she presented on Capital, Hits Radio and BBC Radio 1.Just a year prior to her cancer diagnosis, she made radio history as the first Black woman to host the Radio 1 Breakfast show, stepping in for Greg James. A mere 18 months after completing stage two chemotherapy, Adele participated in Dancing On Ice, making history as the first contestant with a stoma bag to compete in the show.The star revealed that her motivation to participate was to raise awareness about living with a stoma and bag. The former Radio One DJ secured third place in the recent series of the BBC skating competition.She stated: “I wouldn’t have done Dancing On Ice without a stoma. I’m not a dancer. I’m not a performer.” She further added: “I don’t do make-up and pretty things. To have an ostomy, show what’s possible, help kids, open the conversation, lessen the stigma.”Speaking about her Dancing on Ice experience, Adele previously told the Mirror : “It’s been a dream, I’m still getting used to having a stoma because I’ve not had one that long and some people have them from birth, babies and kids have them.“The way the ostimate community have supported me, it’s been amazing. And all the other contestants as well, they’ve all helped me in their own way and all the pros. It’s a privilege to be an ostomate and to be on this show and to be the first one in the history of the show to have a stoma. Also, to work out how to train with a stoma, when to eat, when to drink, what to do with my bag starts coming off which it has done.”
