The UFC recently announced that Islam Makahachev will face Dustin Poirier for his next title defense in the company’s Lightweight division. Islam Makahachev is sitting at the top of the UFC’s pound-for-pound list. He will want to continue his tenure as the best pound-for-pound fighter with a win over Dustin. In an interview, Islam revealed how he thinks he will win his bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302.

Poirier is a veteran in the UFC for over a decade. He had beaten high-profile fighters, including his recent victory over Benoit St-Denis when he overcame the odds to knock out the Frenchmen in the second round.

Islam Makhachev reveals how he plans on winning against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302

Dustin Poirier has been in two title fights in his career. He is an excellent striker but has struggled with opponents who are fluent in grappling. He lost his first title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov and then to Charles Oliveira. He lost both the title bouts via a rear naked choke. Hailing from Dagestan Islam has plans similar to Poirier’s. He revealed how he could finish Poirier in the month of June. He said,

I will take him down, he will try to give me guillotine, and I will take his back and choke him. That’s it.

Dustin Poirier lives putting his opponents in guillotines. He has used this weapon many times in the past. Islam emphasized this and claimed that he was going to finish Poirier if he tried to put him in his guillotine. Islam is confident in his grappling abilities, so much so that if Dustin gets into grappling scrambles, he will emerge victorious come UFC 302.

Islam Makahchev had only lost his career once, many years ago, when he got caught with a straight right. Poirier will want to work on his takedown defense to beat Islam in the five-round bout. Islam will want to finish Dustin on his back, given that Poirier owns elite cardio and is a dangerous striker in the octagon. He and Poirier are set to throw it down, and it’ll be interesting to see who emerges victorious.
