Mike Tyson and Shannon Briggs were involved in a playful street fight on Friday, with the former heavyweight champion ripping off his shirt and squaring up to his friend
Mike Tyson was seen engaging in a playful street brawl with Shannon Briggs, shirtless and ready for action, as he prepares for his upcoming fight against Jake Paul.
Tyson took a nostalgic trip to Brownsville, Brooklyn on Friday, where he spent much of his childhood after moving there at the age of 10. He was accompanied by former boxer Shannon Briggs. As they toured the neighborhood, surrounded by locals, a friendly tension escalated between Tyson and Briggs.
After a brief hug, Tyson tore off his shirt and raised his fists, leading Briggs to do the same. The two engaged in a short slapboxing match, with neither landing any significant blows. When Briggs attempted to lift Tyson’s leg and drop him onto the pavement, both fighters burst into laughter and called off their mock fight.
“Brownsville’s finest always ready for a brawl. Love this guy,” Tyson captioned a video of the incident. Briggs also shared a different perspective of the scuffle, writing: “@miketyson and @cannon_briggs in Brownsville having a straightener in front of #AtlanticTowers ! ! ! ! @smoothedahustler the referee! ! ! ! It’s on!”
Growing up in Brooklyn’s rough streets, Tyson was no stranger to crime and drugs from an early age. The boxing icon opened up about his tumultuous childhood in his 2013 memoir “The Undisputed Truth,” revealing the fear and hardship he endured both inside his home and out on the streets.
“I was scared to be in the house, and I was also scared to go outside,” Tyson confessed in his book, according to MARCA. “By then, I was going to a public school and that was a nightmare.”
Tyson’s family struggled with basic necessities, as he recounted, “We didn’t have hot water to shower in and, if the gas wasn’t on, we couldn’t even boil water,” He continued, detailing his mother’s attempts at teaching him hygiene, “My mother tried to teach me about it (hygiene) but she didn’t do a very good job. She used to take soap and fill a bucket up with hot water and wash me.”
His teen years saw Tyson fall in with a dangerous crowd, resulting in him being jailed 38 times before he even reached the age of 13. Reflecting on those days during a 2022 episode of the “Million Dollaz Worth Of Game” podcast, Tyson admitted, “That’s what we were, savages out there. Survival of the fittest. Even if we know you, if you are weak we gonna get you,”.
He starkly noted the brutal reality of his neighborhood, “If you don’t shoot somebody, that’s disrespectful. You ain’t s*** in Brownville.” Boxing became Tyson’s lifeline, offering him a path away from his troubled past.
Seizing the opportunity, he rose to fame as the youngest heavyweight champion in history at the tender age of 20. Tyson would go on to have a dominant professional career, recording a 50-6 record and 44 wins by knockout en route to being named “The Baddest Man on the Planet.”
