The TV chef was just beginning a question and answer segment about Tarte Tatin, chatting with chefs Claude Bosi and Jonny Lake, when a loud ‘gunshot sound’ was heard echoing through the set
James Martin was forced to halt Saturday Morning to reassure viewers when what sounded like a gunshot was heard.
The presenter was hosting the ITV cookery show, chatting with chefs chefs Claude Bosi and Jonny Lake about a viewer’s Tarte Tatin question. As the three discussed the different ingredients that can be used in the pasty dish, they sat outside James Martin’s house, where the show is often filmed.
As the segment started, James, 52, said: “They are good questions so far. We have got another one. Barbara Rogers, we loved your recipe for Tarte Tatin, it has won awards with the family apparently.”

Telling the viewers he had taken part in a Tarte Tatin masterclass, he read out the viewer’s question: “I want to know is there another fruit you can use in a Tarte Tatin?”
The chef answered: “But it’s not just that, you can use vegetables as well. You can use shallots, bits, and pieces like that.”
But before the three of them could elaborate on the viewer’s question, he was forced to cut in, announcing to camera: “That is not a shotgun by the way, we have got a crow scarer. The farmer has just planted some plants out there, we are going to get a lot of this during the day really. It’s to stop the pigeons going and wrecking his plants as well.”
Earlier this month, James shared that he was scarred for life, as he warned viewers about the dangers of using a hobby knife. While preparing a roast pork dish on an episode of Saturday Morning, he showed viewers the correct way to use a knife in the kitchen.
James advised: “It is quite thick, but what you want to do is get right in there so it opens it up and becomes easier to carve as well. This is where you’re going to get this amazing
But he then recalled a memory from his childhood, revealing he still has a scar from misusing a similar knife when he was a child.
James warned viewers: “Be careful with this knife, whatever you do. I’ve scarred [myself] for life with this. I did this when I was a kid, taking my Cabriolet… well I had a normal little Capri, a little toy Capri, and I wanted to turn it into a Cabriolet Capri and I used one of these. Eight years old. That’s not a good idea!”
The TV chef gave a more sinister health update recently, having revealed in 2023 that he’s been receiving treatment for skin cancer. He said at the time: “I was then diagnosed with cancer on my face and I had to have surgery, which I couldn’t do until two days before Christmas when we had finished filming.”
He continued, sadly noting the recurrence: “Since then it has returned on several occasions and I have to have regular treatments.”
But thankfully, following an operation, he had some good news in April this year, telling Lorraine: “The stitches are falling out. As you know, the last time I was on, I was in the middle of operations. But as we speak, the stitches are falling out of my body at the moment. So yeah, that’s all clear onwards and upwards!”
