During a chat on the set of Good Morning Britain, Richard Madeley earned the ire of X users as he suggested that it may be time for the public to be gentle with Prince Andrew
Richard Madeley asked if it was time to let go of Prince Andrew’s involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal but ITV viewers at home were against the idea and lashed out at the host.
Returning to the helm of Good Morning Britain this Monday alongside Charlotte Hawkins, Richard Madeley, 68, chatted to Kwasi Kwarteng and Nells Abbey and after speaking about the latest political headlines, the group moved on to Prince Andrew.
This came after a photograph of the Duke of York’s disastrous 2019 Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis has passed the first stage of the National Gallery’s acquisitions process, prompting Richard to ask: “Is it time to lay off Prince Andrew?”

He then went on to describe the infamous picture taken of Andrew and Emily, moments after wrapping up their Newsnight exchange as he reportedly asked: “Well, that went rather well, didn’t it?”
Richard underlined that the Duke was “totally unaware of what he’d just done to his profile, his future, his reputation and everything.” The presenter pointed out the brutal backlash Prince Andrew was targeted with following his interview.
A multitude of morning TV watchers swarmed to X, otherwise known as Twitter, as soon as Richard suggested the idea and they were far from happy: “Can’t believe Madeley saying is it time to lay off Prince Andrew, cut him a bit of slack!!!! No!! Switched off!” one livid viewer penned.
“Mainstream British media always try and justify or make excuses for Prince Andrew. Just because he denied the allegations against him there is also the possibility the allegations are true and that is why his mum paid millions to his accuser”, a second added.
A third viewer chimed in: “Richard Madeley is insufferable. ‘We should be giving Prince Andrew a break’.” While another echoed: “Lay off Prince Andrew? Really? Nah.” A fifth TV watcher continued: “Richard Madeley really is a jerk if he thinks that we should cut Prince Andrew some slack.”
In more recent news, Prince Andrew’s feud with King Charles III doesn’t appear to be be settled as the brothers reportedly continue to row over the Duke’s Royal Lodge.
The disgraced son of the late Queen Elizabeth II lives in the 30-room Windsor mansion, seemingly in desperate need for repair. In an unusual set-up, he currently resides with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson and is reportedly reluctant to part with the property.
