Canelo Alvarez survived an onslaught of punches to outclass Jamie Munguia and remain the undisputed middleweight champion.
Canelo wearing dark shorts and Munguia in white, splashed with colors of the Mexican flag, put on a spectacle at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Canelo connected with 43 percent of his punches compared to Munguia’s 29 percent – and that told the story of the fight.
The 33-year-old won the fight 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112, according to the judges’ scorecards, and his show of resilience, toughness and strength taught his younger countryman a thing or two.
Round one began with Munguia using his jab effectively against Canelo, keeping him at bay as well as throwing quick combos. But Canelo reminded the 27-year-old of his power with a fine left hook jab to the body.

The younger Mexican followed suit in round two, throwing a superb one-two with the latter punch connecting with Canelo’s midsection. Canelo seemed somewhat unfazed but looked slow and sluggish compared to his counterpart.
Munguia connected with two fine left hooks before Canelo did well with a right uppercut in the third. But the end of the round ended with a furious attack from Munguia. The 27-year-old unleashed a flurry of shots on Canelo. Most hit the gloves but a couple of slipped through to hit Canelo’s face. The 33-year-old, however, walked back to his corner when the bell rang as if he hadn’t been touched.
And his resilience shone in round four when Munguia, once again on the attack, got caught by a huge one-two uppercut from Canelo to knock him down. It was the first time in Munguia’s career he had been knocked down. Surviving the count and the round, Munguia made it to his corner.
But it was a slightly different Munguia who returned in the fifth, he looked slower, more susceptible to Canelo’s jab and uppercut and the older Mexican began to take more control in the fight.
Canelo oozed confidence in the sixth, wiggling his body and catching Munguia whenever it suited. Munguia attempted to throw five and six-punch combos but every time Canelo would ride them out.
A similar pattern followed in round seven. Munguia would push Canelo into the corner, throw a flurry of punches, and ultimately tire out. As soon as he slowed, Canelo caught him with a superb left hook, stunning his opponent.
Munguia wouldn’t learn his lesson, though, and in credit to the youngster would continue to throw multi-punch combos in round eight. Canelo looked at his opponent at one point, appearing to shake his head at the mad tactics. But the toughness of Canelo would win every time, once again unfazed by a tornado of punches.
After a few rounds of control by Canelo, Munguia put in a better performance in round nine. Landing a few of his punches this time, rather than hit Canelo’s gloves. Sick of his whirlwind of punches at one point, Canelo turned and pushed Munguia into the corner himself. Munguia held quickly and the ref was forced to intervene.
As chants of ‘Canelo, Canelo!’ rang throughout the 10th, the pace continued. Munguia caught Canelo with a fine left hook but it was returned with a decent body shot.
The final two rounds told the same story of a lot of tired punches with plenty failing to connect. Canelo, who didn’t sit down once in the corner during the breaks between rounds, continued to own the fight. Munguia had seconds left to win the fight but just couldn’t impact or knock down the impenetrable Canelo.
Asked what his plans are next, Canelo said: “I don’t know right now. I’m going to rest, I’m going to enjoy my family. But you know, if the money is right, I fight right now.
“At this point, everybody’s asking for everything, right? When I fought Lara, Charlo, Miguel Angel Cotto, Mayweather, Billie Joe Saunders, everybody say I don’t want to fight them. And I fought all of them. So right now, I can ask whatever I want and I can do whatever I want.”
In an all out Mexican warfare, Canelo Alvarez once again proved why he’s the best in the business to beat Jamie Munguia who threw an enormous amount of punches at his rival
