An Antiques Roadshow guest became “lost for words” when the true value of her late dad’s lighter was unveiled, along with its rarity.
An Antiques Roadshow guest told an expert to “stop it” when he shared the almighty price tag of her inherited and rare lighter.
The BBC series travelled to Portchester where expert Mark Hill was met with a guest who wanted a decorative and personal item to be appraised.
“So we’re looking at a, dare I say, rather kitsch 1950s, 1960s cigarette lighter”, he said. She stated: “My father worked for Dunhill as a salesman in the 1950s.”
Mark replied: “Magic word – Dunhill. And of course there it is on the front. What we’re looking at is what is called a Dunhill ‘aquarium’ lighter and one thing you don’t find in an aquarium is moths.”
The guest said: “That’s always intrigued me a bit really, because I have heard it’s called an aquarium lighter and it seems bizarre there’s moths on it.”

Antiques Roadshow expert Mark Hill was impressed by the ‘rarity’ of an aquarium lighter.
Hill questioned if she had seen any aquarium lighters before with her commenting that she had on Antiques Roadshow where they were decorated with fish.
“And they’re bright colours and they’re jolly and jazzy aren’t they?” he continued. “And that’s what this was all about so they were effectively little artworks in their own right.
“They would take a panel of lucite and they would carve from the back the pattern out so they had a watercolour to work from which had been approved by Dunhill.
“And then they’d be sent elsewhere to be painted in bright colours so you end up with these almost shimmering, with the effect of the lucite, sort of fish, you get that watery thing.
“But here, moths on a black background -”, the guest then chipped in, labelling it as “bizarre” as he shared he had only seen one other example which had one rather than two moths.
Antiques Roadshow has previously shown aquarium lighters with fish decorations but not moths. “Do you like it?” Mark asked as the guest enthusiastically shared: “I love it. I absolutely love it. It’s very, very precious to me, sentimentally.”
Mark then unexpectedly queried: “Is it more precious when I say it’s worth £5-7,000?”
The guest exclaimed: “Oh stop it! Don’t be silly. Are you kidding?” as she covered her face with her hands.
He answered: “I’m not kidding. Rarity really counts. These have exploded among collectors in the past 10, 15 years and they will fight and fight and fight and compete to get the rarest. As I say, I’ve only ever seen another one with one moth and I haven’t seen any with two moths.”
“Wow. What a clever father I had, pick the one with the moths!” she laughed.
Mark agreed that he was “remarkably smart” as the guest became visibly touched as she said: “Thank you. Thank you very much, I’m kind of a bit lost for words. Thank you.”
