Joshua Kimmich, a midfielder for Bayern Munich, is apparently still a transfer target for Barcelona, who plan to sign him in the summer.
Over the summer, the 28-year-old was strongly linked to a transfer to the La Liga winners, with their head coach Xavi stating that the Germany international was on their radar.
“He is an extremely skilled player with a great understanding of the game. Negotiations with Bayern will take place if the door is open,” Xavi stated earlier this year to Mundo Deportivo.
Throughout the 2022–23 season, Kimmich was once again a key member of the German team, with 47 appearances across all competitions, seven goals, and eleven assists.
As of the beginning of current season, the defensive midfielder has made 15 appearances for Bayern and five assists.
Due to budgetary constraints, Barcelona was eventually unable to sign Kimmich during the summer, but Fichajes claims the German is still a top target for the team.
According to the report, the midfield player is being evaluated for the summer of 2020 as he is anticipated to seek for a move away from Allianz Arena in pursuit of a new challenge.
Since Kimmich’s contract with Bayern expires in June 2025, the club is not in a good position to decide how to proceed with him, which might result in his departure the following year.
Due to their financial circumstances, Barcelona is unlikely to be able to pay a significant sum for Kimmich; instead, permanent agreements for the on-loan pair of Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix may be sought.
The German joined Allianz Arena from Stuttgart in July 2015, and since then, he has made 362 appearances for the team, tallying 40 goals and 99 assists.
Oriol Romeu was added by Barcelona during the summer to expand their alternatives in the midfield after the inspiring Sergio Busquets left.
Despite rumours regarding his future, Frenkie de Jong is currently expected to sign a new contract and remain with the team. Their other midfield alternatives are Ilkay Gundogan, Gavi, Fermin Lopez, and Pedri.
At the end of the season, though, Xavi is anticipated to push for another arrival in that part of the pitch.
Though the midfield player is thought to be among the greatest in the world for his position, any transfer is probably going to hinge on Bayern’s value.
