Good Morning Britain hosts Richard Madeley and Trisha Goddard clashed with debaters on the ITV show as they discussed university debts.
Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley boldly declared, “I’m not sorry!” during a fiery on-air debate with co-host Trisha Goddard. The duo were locked in a discussion about the value of university education versus jumping straight into work.
Madeley, who skipped university for a career in journalism, revealed his original plan was to “read English at university then join some sort of graduate scheme at a newspaper”. However, he bypassed higher education and doesn’t regret it, stating emphatically that he’s “not sorry” for the path he took.
The conversation heated up when Trisha questioned the practicality of certain degrees, asking Richard, “What if you end up doing a degree that ends up being quote unquote ‘useless’, you know, for what you’re trying to achieve? What would you have done a degree in?”
Richard responded: “English. I was gonna do English. If I hadn’t joined the local paper I was going to read English at uni and then get some sort of graduate placement at a newspaper. But I just jumped the queue by six years. I’m not sorry. I’m not sorry I didn’t go.”
Social media users weighed in on the debate, with one viewer remarking: “This morning’s revelation on GMB is that Richard Madeley and Trisha Goddard didn’t go to university apparently!”
Trisha and Richard said they didn’t go to university
Another added their two cents, suggesting that “Degrees for the large part, are pointless. I would recommend going straight into work and study part time.”
“The current system is largely there to support people who teach and those that lend money. It’s labelled as not debt BUT it has a tangible impact on borrowing power,” reports the Mirror.
GMB descended into a fiery debate As the show progressed, two guests were invited to debate – one championing apprenticeships, the other higher education. Richard, however, couldn’t help but interject, insisting that pursuing university education could lead to substantial debts with no job assurance at the end.
One viewer humorously commented: “Would Richard be questioning student debt if Martin Lewis were explaining it to him?” Another expressed nostalgia: “The part of me that will always be stuck in the 90s is absolutely loving Richard Madeley and Trisha Goddard presenting this week!”
